EFFECT OF THE TYPE OF DILUENT ON THE QUALITY OF FREE-RANGE CHICKEN SPERMATOZOA (GALLUS DOMESTICUS) STORED AT A TEMPERATURE OF 5°C

The native chicken is one of Indonesia's local livestock genetic resources that has great potential to be developed in Indonesia. Genetic quality can be improved through artificial insemination programs, which are highly dependent on the quality of the semen used. This study aims to analyze the effect of different diluents on the quality of native chicken spermatozoa stored at 5°C. This study is an experimental design with the treatment of two types of diluents namely (1) Ringer lactate and (2) Ringer dextrose as well as 0 days, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days and 5 days as replicates. The observed variables were motility, viability, and abnormality of spermatozoa. Data analysis used was T-test. The results showed that motility, viability and abnormality of spermatozoa in Ringer lactate diluent were very good (p<0.01) and could survive up to 5 days compared to Ringerdextrose. The quality of spermatozoa in lactated Ringer's diluent and Ringer's dextrose at 5 days storage were, respectively, spermatozoa motility of 43% and 8%; spermatozoa viability of 64% and 14% while the abnormality value was 18% and 67%. Ringer lactate diluent is better at maintaining the quality of village chicken spermatozoa stored at 5°C than Ringer dextrose.
