COLONIAL REFLECTIONS IN HAMKA’S TENGGELAMNYA KAPAL VAN DER WIJCK : A HISTORYCAL STUDY

This study examines colonial social values in Hamka’s Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck through a historical approach. The novel depicts Minangkabau society during the Dutch colonial period, marked by rigid traditions, social stratification, and lineage-based discrimination. Using a descriptive qualitative method and content analysis, this study applies Wellek and Warren’s historical approach to analyze the relationship between text and context. The findings show that colonial values appear through social hierarchy and restrictions on individual freedom, particularly in marriage, and continue to resonate in contemporary Indonesian society as enduring social inequalities
