PRESERVING LOCAL CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE DIGITAL ERA: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital technology has fundamentally transformed the ways in which cultural knowledge is documented, disseminated, and transmitted across generations, creating both significant opportunities and substantial challenges for the preservation of local cultural heritage in contemporary society. Amid increasing globalization and the growing influence of transnational cultural flows, concerns have emerged regarding the declining engagement of younger generations with traditional cultural practices and the potential erosion of cultural identities that have historically functioned as important markers of community cohesion and social continuity. This study aims to examine the role of digital technology in supporting the preservation of local cultural heritage while identifying the principal opportunities and challenges associated with achieving long-term cultural sustainability in the digital era. A qualitative literature review approach was employed through a systematic examination of scholarly articles, academic books, institutional reports, and policy documents published between 2020 and 2025. The collected materials were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and dominant themes related to digital cultural preservation initiatives. The findings indicate that digital archives, virtual museums, social media platforms, and interactive educational technologies have substantially expanded public access to cultural resources and strengthened cultural awareness among younger audiences. At the same time, issues related to unequal technological access, commercialization of cultural expressions, concerns regarding cultural authenticity, and the increasing homogenization of cultural content remain significant obstacles. The study concludes that sustainable cultural preservation requires an integrated approach that combines technological innovation, active community participation, supportive cultural policies, and inclusive educational strategies to ensure the continued transmission and protection of cultural heritage for future generations
